About This Episode
Announcer: Welcome to the sweet spot podcast where we interview players and coaches across all levels of professional baseball.
Shane: Welcome to the sweet spot network. I’m here with Braxton Garrett. How are you Braxton?
Braxton: I’m good man. How you doing?
Shane: Good. Oh, so I heard you were the ping pong champion of the Miami Marlins. Tell me about that please.
Braxton: Yeah, I won the tournament. I’ve been playing for a long time, so you know, that was fun. It was fun.
Shane: How long does that, like, how long have you been playing for?
Braxton: Okay. I’ve been playing since I was about eight or so. Right around there. I was really young.
Shane: When did you start playing baseball? I know you played ping pong at eight. Like when did you start playing baseball?
Braxton: I started playing really young. I don’t know what age exactly, but my dad has been a high school baseball coach my whole life, so I’ve been around it since I was born.
Shane: Oh, that’s really nice. What kind of gear do you use?
Braxton: Like, like a glove, like my glove?
Shane: Yeah just like anything.
Braxton: Rawlings glove. I wear all kinds of cleats, but mostly adidas. I like adidas I think the most.
Shane: Nice. Are you sponsored by Adidas?
Braxton: I am not. I just wear their stuff.
Shane: So you were drafted in the first round. How’s that feel?
Braxton: Awesome. I didn’t necessarily, I don’t necessarily know how to describe it, but one of the best moments of my life.
Shane: Yeah. so what’s your favorite kind of food?
Braxton: Oh, junk food, man. I’m a bad eater. Anything, but probably chicken. Probably just chicken in general.
Shane: Yeah, do you have a favorite place to get it?
Braxton: Chick-Fil-A easy.
Shane: Chick-Fil-A is really good. Oh, do you have a best friend on your team?
Braxton: Yeah, I’ve been rooming with Jordan Holloway for going on three years now, cause we had Tommy John Surgery five days apart from each other.
Shane: Who’s your favorite MLB player as a kid? Like who do you look up to?
Braxton: Clayton Kershaw. He was, he was my favorite player growing up. Still my favorite player. Now he, he’s not the same guy that he was, but he’s still great. We have pretty similar stuff. I think. Obviously he’s a little bit better than I am right now, but we’re similar pitchers so I try and mimic a lot of the things that he does.
Shane: Yeah. Clayton Kershaw like throws a big curve ball. Do you too?
Braxton: Oh yeah. That’s my best pitch.
Shane: How would you grip it? In general?
Braxton: Just around the horseshoe. Its a very generic grip actually.
Shane: Okay. That’s really nice. So that’s kind of it. Thank you so much.
