About This Episode
Shane Herman: Welcome to the fastball podcast. I’m here with Miami Marlins. Martin Prado. Martin, how are you?
Martin Prado: I’m really well, really well.
Shane Herman: Okay. So who is your favorite teammate of all time in the big leagues?
Martin Prado: I think one of the top three that I’ve had was still, but I’m not playing with him anymore is Brian McCann, he’s currently playing with the Atlanta Braves. He was like a mentor to me and he would just teach me. He taught me about baseball and I respect him a lot.
Shane Herman: What’s your favorite MLB stadium to play at?
Martin Prado: The San Diego Padres. Just the weather is such a like good environment. I guess after that, Miami. I like to play in Miami because it’s a lot of different people. From Latin people, American people, and there’s prowess when they go to the game. It’s really loud and it’s fun to play like that.
Shane Herman: Yeah. What kind of gear do you use?
Martin Prado: Well, back in the day I used to have Bike for like protection and now EvoShield is a company, they just, you know, help us to protect our elbow and the shin guard, stuff like that. And for batting gloves I use Franklin’s.
Shane Herman: Nice. Are you sponsored by them?
Martin Prado: Yes, yes I’ve been for a couple of years with them.
Shane Herman: What age did you start playing little league?
Martin Prado: I didn’t play little league, but I started playing baseball when I was five and a lot of stuff. I have fun and had fun as a kid and I still have fun playing baseball.
Shane Herman: Yeah, baseball’s a lot of fun. Who’s the toughest pitcher you ever faced in general?
Martin Prado: I think, Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. I’ve been facing him the last 10 years and he always gets me in trouble.
Shane Herman: So what is your favorite thing to do outside of baseball?
Martin Prado: Well, I like horses. And my family, currently and in the last couple years we’ve been having horses around and cattle and stuff like that. I like to have animals, you know, with my family and they’re currently working with a farm back home. So I like to play with and be around animals.
Shane Herman: Yeah. So, you play many positions? What’s your favorite out of all of them?
Martin Prado: Well, coming up to the big leagues I played shortstop and second base. But, later in my career, I started playing third base and I like it a lot. But as more positions you can play, you get more chance to play and be on the field.
Shane Herman: Yeah. So I read that you learned English by watching subtitles. How long did that take you?
Martin Prado: It took me at least, like probably in 2003 I started watching a lot of movies with subtitles. It took me like five years.
Shane Herman: Oh, wow!
Martin Prado: Yes.
Shane Herman: So final question. What’s your favorite kind of food to eat?
Martin Prado: I like fish. I mean, I like the fact just eating a fresh fish with some vegetables, it’s really healthy. And also I like, I enjoy it. Just eating that.
Shane Herman: Yeah. Thank you so much. You’re currently on your rehab assignment I hope you feel better soon.
Martin Prado: Thank you very much. Thanks for your interview. Thank you for having me though.
